Top 10 Great SEO Advice From a Google

If you spend less time worrying about site rank and the number of articles you have, she explained, and more time worrying about contributing useful content to your blog that people will actually enjoy reading and would like to share with friends, Google will notice you. A lot of these SEO tips you may already know, but it’s always good to be reminded of good habits. The best way to get noticed online is to be unique. Create something that hasn’t been created yet, and people will come knocking.

1: Recent Relevant Articles
Adding articles frequently (a few times a week) is important if you want to establish regular readership and regular search engine indexing. Each post is a new page that search engines can see, and therefore a new opportunity to get found online. Don’t hotlink either, which is linking to images from other people’s site instead of hosting them yourself. This screams “I stole this article from someone else” pretty loudly. Essentially, writing articles means contributing something new and useful to the internet space. And make sure you use H1, H2 and H3 headers properly on your articles too. No funny stuff.

2: Include High-Hitting Keywords in Article Titles
This is perhaps the most important SEO advice. Google’s Adsense Search Tool is an amazing keyword resource provided by Google. Before you write an article, do just five minutes of research here to pick a title with high-popularity keywords. Type in broadly what your article is about, such as “Beverly Hills Real Estate”, then click search. Sort the list by Global Monthly Searches. The higher the monthly searches and the lower the competition, the more powerful that keyword. For instance, using this tool you’ll discover that the keyword search “MLS.CA” gets about 1.2 million searches a month, and almost no one has written an article about it. This is a clumsy keyword to include in your title, but if done creatively it could drive a lot of traffic. Perhaps write an article simply called “What is MLS.CA?” (Just FYI, since we started with a real estate example, Multiple Listing Service/System (MLS) is a suite of services that enables brokers to establish contractual offers of compensation among broker). Yawn.

3: Inbound Links
Google assesses the popularity of your website based on links. The more websites that feature links to your site, the better. And the more authoritative the website that links to your page, the better. One way to increase your number of inbound links is to have really good-quality articles that people reference. The other way is to ask existing clients to link to your website. Perhaps give a testimonial on someone else’s site that includes a link back to your site. E.g. “My name is Michael, I’m an analyst at Canon Properties (www.canonproperties.com) and I had such a great experience with this broker-dealer, etc.” Don’t just ask for link-exchanges, this practice has been abused in the past and search engines are onto this trick.

4: Guest Write For an Authoritative Blog
In the link-building exercise, the emphasis shouldn’t be made on quantity, but rather quality. Look at niche directories that are associated with your industry and contact them asking if you can write an article for them (that include links or references to your site). You can get your company in front of hundreds or thousands of readers if you provide a well-written blog post for a popular blog. This is amazing free advertisement, and it’s mutually beneficial to both parties (you get free traffic and they get a new content, which will also drive traffic). Most blogs that allow guest posts let you to add a short bio paragraph at the end of your article with a link back to your site. This link can be very valuable to your SEO efforts because quality links are the most important factor in outranking your competition for competitive keyword phrases.

5: Readability Level
Your content should be written in as simple language as possible, with minimal spelling mistakes. Misspelling is a red flag to search engines. Include high-hitting keywords but don’t try and overload the article with keywords, this is also a deterrent to search engines. Spelling mistakes and keyword overload make your site appear unprofessional.

6: Tags
Include about 5-6 tags on every new article (no more than that). These keywords can be verbs or nouns that best explain what the article is about. Don’t work about high-hitting keywords here, it’s more of a roadmap for search engines and users on your site.

7: Social Media Management
One of the reasons many companies are using Twitter and Facebook more and more is to increase the number of inbound links. As your content and articles become viral, there exist an increasingly higher number of links pointing to your page. Not only will this drive traffic, its good SEO fuel because it indicates to search engines that your site is more popular. Update your Twitter and Facebook pages as often as possible, of not every day. Also recruit followers, perhaps with incentives. Some sites offer coupons, discounts and important information STRICTLY on the social media pages just to force people to join the page. Make sure you also create a page on www.delicious.com, www.digg.com, and www.stumbleupon.com, and add your posts to their archives regularly.

8: Domain Expiration
Search engines factor domain “stability” when looking at your pages. For this reason, most experts agree that you should register your domain for a long time to indicate your site isn’t a spam site and that you expect to be around for awhile. Anything over one or two years is good.

9: Blog Comment Activity
Although not quite as effective as writing for other blogs, you can comment on other blogs at the end of each post with something like, “This is a great article. I run a business Bla Bla Bla and we use this tactic all the time.” Remember, the site administrator usually reviews all comments, so don’t make it too spammy. It’s got to contribute something useful to the discussion board or it’ll probably be removed. Sometimes sites make you register to a subscriber list before making a comment. Do this.

10: Image Alt and Title Metadata
When adding images, make sure you fill in the title, alt and description sections of the images, so your site can be found via Google Image searches. Google Images is probably one of the most underrated ways to get your blog discovered.
